Who We Are
The Civil War ended in 1865, but until 1869, Virginia was still under military control. Reconstruction began and the people who lived in Virginia needed to protect the new homes and buildings that they were building.
In January of 1869, Rockingham Home Mutual was formed when several property owners met at a small church in Port Republic, Virginia, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley (pictured to the right).
People became members of the mutual company and had fire policies that covered whatever structures they owned – our old policies featured a lot of mills, silos, barns, as well as homes.
Over the years, Rockingham Home Mutual grew. It became Rockingham Mutual when it consolidated with West Rockingham Mutual Fire Company in 1968. A year later, Rockingham merged with Brethren Mutual Fire Association.
Over the last thirty years, Rockingham has continued to grow through mergers with other Virginia mutual companies. In 2012, the Rockingham Group launched Embassy Risk Management to serve the needs of US citizens living and working abroad. Our International Property Package covers auto, property, and personal liability, and we offer a variety of international medical programs designed specifically for the unique needs of individuals residing outside of the US.
We are focused on improving the technology capabilities and product lineup to better serve our customers over the long term. With over 50,000 policyholders, we offer a full collection of modern insurance policies to fit all of your personal insurance needs.
If you have your policy with Rockingham, thank you for trusting us with your insurance needs. We hope that you will refer us to your neighbors and friends.
If you are considering us for your insurance, we hope that this history has helped you understand who we are, where we came from, and while we may be old, we are not old-fashioned. Our employees and agents are here to serve you.
